Downtown Murals – Washington Mills
The project began in 2024 when a call for design entries received 118 submissions from muralists around the country. Lena Ugren and the Urban Art Bloom team got to work securing the wall, building a consortium of stakeholders and evaluating muralists. Nine artists- each influenced by O’Keeffe – were selected to paint their design onto a 12x16’ portion of the wall.
The building housing Washington Mills has its own historical connection to Sun Prairie, as it is credited for saving the community during the Great Depression when it was the Wisconsin Porcelain Company. Since then, the space surrounding the nearly 100-year-old building is home to farmers markets, car shows, concerts and more. Revolutionizing this space allows local art to serve as the backdrop for future social connections and establishes O’Keeffe as an integral part of Sun Prairie’s community identity.
The downtown murals will be painted during Sun Prairie’s First Mural Fest from June 18 – 25, with a grand reveal and celebration on June 26th from 5-8 p.m.
Get To Know The Artists
We are thrilled to be able to feature the artwork of nine talented artists from across the country who will bring their vision to life on the Washington Mills building this summer. Each one with their own unique style influenced by our own Georgia O’Keeffe. We encourage you to get to know them, follow them and support their art in Sun Prairie and beyond.
