Our community is proud of our refuse and recycle program. Recycling is the 1 hands-on environmental activity that we can take part in regularly, since we all face choices several times each day about what goes in our refuse cart. Thank you for taking the time to familiarize yourself with our refuse and recycle requirements. If we all Think Recycling the impact we can have on our environment will be tremendous.

The Basics

Refuse and recycling collections are provided by the City of Sun Prairie’s contractor, Pellitteri Waste Systems (608-257-4285). Only residents living in the following types of dwellings receive city-sponsored refuse and recycling collections:
  • 4-Plex
  • Condominium
  • Duplex
  • Single-Family Home

Sign up for email alerts from Pellitteri for weather delays, recycling updates, etc. by clicking HERE.(Be sure to include your address)

Residents receiving city-sponsored collections are also allowed to use the City of Sun Prairie Recycle Center. You will need to apply for the free permit either online or in person:

Residents receiving city-sponsored collections are also provided with either 65 gallon or 95 gallon disposal receptacles. If you wish to get additional refuse or recycle carts, please call Pellitteri at 608-257-4285.

Multi-Family Dwelling / Commercial Properties

If you live in a multi-family dwelling or own commercial property, you are unable to use the Recycle Center. You cannot use the Recycle Center because these types of properties do not pay the special tax charge to do so, whereas the above mentioned properties do pay for its use.

Multi-family and commercial properties are responsible for providing their own refuse and recycling collection services and disposal containers. All questions for collections on these properties should be directed to either the Property Manager or the Property Owner. The city does not handle these collections.

Refuse & Recycle Cart Storage

On April 3, 2012, the City Council amended City ordinances related to the refuse and recycling containers provided by the city - the green 65- or 95-gallon collection carts. The changes will not affect most Sun Prairie residents. If you only have 2 collection carts there are no mandatory changes regarding where or how you store your carts.

Take Pride

However, the City Council is encouraging community members to Take Pride in their neighborhood and consider making room in your garage to store collection carts, or to locate them in a more discrete place on the side of your home. The council has recognized that the size of the carts may make inside storage difficult for some residential homes. If only 1 cart is able to be stored inside, this effort can have a positive impact on how our neighbors maintain their property. Residents are encouraged to not store collection carts in the front of their home.

3 or More Carts

If a residence has 3 or more collection carts, the ordinance changes do impact you! If you are unable to keep your collection carts inside, and have all 3 or more carts stored outside your home, you must screen all of the collection carts. If you have 3 or more collection carts, but only have 2 outside, no screening is required.

Per city ordinance, 3 or more collection carts are required to be fully screened so as not to be visible from adjoining properties. Screening can be in the form of landscaping or an enclosure. If you are required to screen your carts, and have questions about what is required, please contact the City's Public Works Department at 608-837-3050.

Proper Cart Placement

Proper cart placement is the 1st step in insuring your cart is collected. Refuse and recycle carts must be curbside by 7 a.m. on your collection day. Carts should be placed at the end of your driveway or on the terrace, not in the street.
Carts along the curb
Please allow 4 feet between your cart and other objects (mailboxes, other carts, etc.), and 10 feet from parked cars on the street. Lids need to close on the cart to be picked up, overflowing carts can result in the material spilling into the street and may not be collected. Call 608-837-3050 with any questions.

Missed collection?

If your curbside collections were missed, please first verify that they were out properly; this includes but not limited to correct spacing between carts and objects, out by 7 AM on collection day, and correct week for recycling. If everything was done properly, please contact Pellitteri at (608) 257-4285 to alert them to this issue. If possible when calling, let them know whether you were the only one missed or if others were as well (entire block or just one side of the street). Thank you for your cooperation in this matter-contacting the vendor directly will result in the best resolution to your missed collections.
